Why was Creasy suicidal? ›

Struggling with alcoholism, burnout and guilt over his actions with the CIA, Creasy tries to commit suicide but his gun misfires. He is reminded by Rayburn of their saying "a bullet always tells the truth" and begins to consider that he was not meant to die.

Despite its realistic portrayal and intense narrative, “Man on Fire” is not based on a true story. The film and its predecessor, the 1987 adaptation starring Scott Glenn, draw inspiration from Quinnell's novel rather than real-life events.

In order to extract information from a kidnapper, Creasy duct tapes his hands to the steering wheel of his car, severs his fingers and cauterizes the stumps with a cigarette lighter (gore splatters the windshield during the severing). He then shoots the man and rolls the car off a cliff. The torture doesn't end there.

But His Story Is Inspired By Two Real-Life Kidnappings

Man on Fire is not an original story by Tony Scott. It's based on a 1980 book by A. J. Quinnell of the same name, starring John Creasy, a fictional character.

Inside the car, Creasy succumbs to his repeated gunshot wounds he received earlier, at peace with himself and die for his wounds. Sanchez is later shot dead at his home by Detective Manzano, who had been following and helping Creasy.

Creasy calls Daniel Sánchez and threatens to kill all of his family unless he gives himself up, but Sánchez reveals that Pita is still alive, and offers her in exchange for Aurelio and Creasy. He surrenders himself to Sánchez' men, after Pita is released to him.

8 'Man on Fire' (2004)

Fans of Man on Fire loved the magnetic lead performance by Washington and the film's high-octane plot and fierce action scenes. However, many film critics took issue with the movie's excessive roughness, plot holes, and stereotypical portrayal of Mexico City.

Man On Fire is not directly based on a true story but does come from a novel of the same name. The film follows ex-CIA operative John Creasy (Denzel Washington) as he reluctantly accepts a job as a bodyguard for nine-year-old Pita (Dakota Fanning), the daughter of wealthy businessman Samuel Ramos (Marc Anthony).

Lisa, unaware of Samuel's involvement, angrily tells Creasy to "kill him or (she) will". He leaves Samuel a gun and the bullet he previously intended to commit suicide with. Remorseful, Samuel loads the gun and shoots himself in the head.

Cigarette Burns: Pita notices that Creasy has scars from cigarette burns on his hands, hinted to be a remnant from his past as a soldier, and asks them where he got them. He tells her she doesn't need to know and should treat him as an employee, not a friend.
